I usually use 'ftp'.  That should be included with any bare bones linux
installation.

But, yeah, there are many better, or at least more powerful,
alternatives.  I recommend lftp generally--it has bash-like
tab-completion and command line history, which is handy.  

There are also several GUI ones.  I believe FTP might be integrated into
nautilus now although I'm not certain. You can do ssh-tunnel transfers
with nautilus by putting "ssh://hostname.com" in the location bar.
