[Linux-disciples] Monitor Resolution

I am having some trouble with monitor resolution. I am using GNOME for 
my desktop environment and am unable to select the proper monitor 
resolution, 1024 x 768.  800 x 600 is my only choice.

I think I need to edit the X configuration file... correct?

Is there a way to do this without editing the file directly?
