I could try that. That's suboptimal, though; I'd prefer not
to have to know the encoding of every file that I paste in.
That's why I'd like vim to just tell me which characters are
causing problems; I'll fix them one by one and be done with
it.

I got a book on Unicode a while ago for precisely reasons
like this: is it hard for a program to determine a file's
encoding?
