I spoke too soon. The machine now locks up soon after
logging in through gdm: the mouse stops moving, the little
applet that tracks processor use in my taskbar stops
refreshing ... everything. And the processor-activity light
on my Thinkpad doesn't show any activity at all.

syslog, /var/log/messages, and dmesg all provide no clues.

If I don't move the mouse much, the problem doesn't seem to
show up. Indeed, if I move the mouse during the GNOME login
process, it seems to lock the system up more or less right
away. Whereas I didn't move the mouse during login, and have
moved it sparingly during my computer use since then, and
I'm still going strong.

Any ideas where else to look for data?
