I inserted acpi=off into my kernel parameters during boot, after which
hitting Fn-F4 worked to sleep the computer (closing the lid also works,
but I disabled that option from the BIOS). 

It looks I'm using a "Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2" card. Here's
