[Linux-disciples] what is .thumbnails/normal

just out of curiosity: when you preview an image in
konquerer (kde's file manager) it seems to cache a
small version of the image in $homd/.thumbnails/large
or ./normal.  but it apparently is not really a cache
because if you look at the same image twice, it saves
it twice.  so, what is its purpose.
