[Linux-disciples] new debian install -- trouble getting online

The instructions are assuming that you already have your own kernel
compiled.  You need to do that first:

Install kernel-tree-2.6.8; this gives you the latest Debian version of
the kernel source tree.  It's put into a file
'/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.8.tar.bz2'.  uncompress it using 'tar
xvfj', and then go ahead and configure the kernel and create a
kernel-image using make-kpkg.

(Probably there's some way to do all this without creating your own
kernel, but I don't know it.)
