[Linux-disciples] new debian install -- trouble getting online

Can you ssh to Thinkpad? I.e.:
ssh 192.168.1.102
(assuming 192.168.1.102 is the Thinkpad)
Make sure the ssh package is installed on the Thinkpad and that you
configured it to accept connections/run as a daemon/server. If you
didn't, you can reconfigure it with:
dpkg-reconfigure ssh
