[Linux-disciples] Low-level reformatting under Linux

Are there any good free-as-in-free-speech-AND-beer utilities
to low-level-reformat a disk? I may be encountering a disk
tomorrow that's 100% Windows, and I may need to reclaim part
of that for Linux; I'd rather not pay for the utility.
