[Linux-disciples] dma_timer_expiry problems

I just got two new hard drives. I'm getting the following sort of errors
with both 2.4.x kernels and 2.6.x kernels:
Jun 29 21:20:51 localhost kernel: hdb: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x61
Jun 29 21:21:01 localhost kernel: hdb: error waiting for DMA
Jun 29 21:21:01 localhost kernel: hdb: dma timeout retry: status=0x5a { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Index }
Jun 29 21:21:01 localhost kernel:
Jun 29 21:21:26 localhost kernel: hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x20
Jun 29 21:21:26 localhost kernel: hda: timeout waiting for DMA
Jun 29 21:21:26 localhost kernel: hda: timeout waiting for DMA
Jun 29 21:21:26 localhost kernel: hda: (__ide_dma_test_irq_Re2051037) called while not waiting
Jun 29 21:21:26 localhost kernel: hdb: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
Jun 29 21:21:26 localhost kernel:
Jun 29 21:21:26 localhost kernel: hdb: drive not ready for command
Jun 29 21:21:26 localhost kernel: ide0: reset: success
But only occasionally, like every few hours.
It seems highly unlikely that both of these drives are defective in the
same way, or that the defect would manifest itself nearly simultaneously
on both. Googling hasn't revealed any solutions or concrete diagnoses.
Anyone here have any suggestions? smartmontools tests both drives as
without problem and is not reporting any ongoing errors.
Is it conceivable that these errors are harmless? I always get very
nervous when ever an hdx error pops up.
