I got the same unknown-block kernel panic when upgrading to
2.6.7 -- but just like Karl, only sometimes. This page seems

I'm going to recompile with CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE and
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDISK set to compile into the kernel and
see if that helps. As it is, for some reason they were set
to compile as modules.
