I figured it out, and the answer might actually be valuable
for others. The trouble is that I'm using NIS, and in my
nsswitch.conf file I've configured my machine to consult NIS
before consulting local files when it's looking up
hostnames. I had updated /etc/hosts on the NIS server, but
hadn't run 'make -C /var/yp' to propagate the changes. When
I did that, everything went fine.
