[Linux-disciples] GUI For Ordering Files

Anyone know of a nice GUI (or hack accomplishing one) for reordering
files in a directory?
The situation is several folders, each with hundreds of images. We want
to reorder the images in a natural way. Thus, the files need to be
renamed so that the alphanumeric order corresponds to the desired order.
Of course, it is possible to go through manually in, say, Nautilus, and
rename each one "1.jpg" "2.jpg" "3.jpg" etc.. But then the problem
arises that you want to put something in between 2 and 3, so you then
need to rename everything else or do something awkward like "3a.jpg"
(which would come before 3). Or we could do "10.jpg" "20.jpg" "30.jpg"
etc. making space for later inserts, but this all seems kind of awkward.
A quick search of the Debian archive did not reveal any appropriate
tools. Can anyone think of a clever way to do this? It is important
that the images be viewable (as thumbnails) as they are reordered as
well.
