I believe there were two such OSS options under the ALSA
subtree, and I checked them both.

I didn't think I had to. My assumption was that since ALSA
was compiled into the kernel, it would intercept any calls
to OSS and turn them into ALSA calls.

A reasonable thing to check, certainly. But kinda lame if
that's what's required.
