Damned switches that I fail to pay attention to. Thanks,
Dylan, that did the trick. Turns out that I had two backup
copies of my hard drive, one of them ... sitting on the hard
drive itself, and the other -- a month out of date --
sitting on the drive that the first one was supposed to be
sitting on. All fixed now, and back down to a nice size:

Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1             9.3G  3.0G  5.9G  34% /
