[Linux-disciples] screenrc: two characters required for escape, ^__ no longer works

My screenrc just stopped working. I get the error:

   /home/adam/.screenrc: two characters required after escape.

The line in question:

   escape '^__'

(the point is to be able to switch between multiple screens by pressing
<ctrl-underscore> rather than the default <ctrl-a> which likes to be used
for other things).

I got this setup originally from ken; why might it have to stopped
working?
