So they're both really connected as PS/2 devices. This would make it less
likely (it seems to me) to just disappear as devices--the PS/2 support in
2.4 series is more robust than USB support generally.

Sure there is. It's called 'make oldconfig'.

This won't work so well with the 2.6 kernel series, since so much has
changed, but for 2.4.22 you will only need to answer a few more questions
at build time, and it should be mostly "no".

Also, hopefully you are aware of make menuconfig, an ncurses-based
kernel configuration.

That's just looking for a USB mouse, which you don't have.
