USB trackball with a dongle to adapt it to a PS/2 port (the dongle came
with the trackball); PS/2 keyboard.

That is a good plan. It's always tricky for me to figure out which
options to pick when upgrading the kernel; I wish I could somehow say,
"Just pick the same options as the kernel I already have," but it never
seems to be that easy.

Nothing in dmesg. In the X log, there's

(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/mice
        No such device.
(EE) Generic Mouse: cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Generic Mouse"
(II) UnloadModule: "mouse"

though it's not tagged with date or time information and it's actually
toward the end of the log; I suspect the stuff toward the end is from
the most recent period when it's been working correctly.

Nothing in syslog, as far as I can tell.
