I had thought of those, but
1) the polling approach (cron) is less efficient than the event-driven
approach; when possible, I look for event-driven approaches, and
2) I'd like the solution to be more general than just vim; it should work
even if you decide to edit the file in emacs.
All hypotheticals, naturally. I'm just thinking out loud.
