[*BCM*] Bostoncriticalmass Digest, Vol 69, Issue 9

 Phil absolutely.....good job!

If there was any one thing to be banned, I'd say all motorized vehicles in bike lanes (scooters, mopeds and segways). As is now, scooters often use the bike lane as a means to pass cars on the right by darting in and out lane. Not too safe and then there is the size, direct exhaust and heat. Most scooters can legally ride in a bike lane, but most seem to exceed the 20 (or is it 25) MPH speed limit there.

Yes, let's not go down this road. I won't even engage the topic of banning a type of bicycle, though I'm chomping at the bit. Let's just say: know your bike, know your stopping distance, don't go faster than you can stop, know that this changes based on road conditions. Any bicycle that is in good mechanical shape can be ridden safely in the city. Any type of bike, any tire size, can suffice as long as the rider knows his/her bike and its limitations. And of course, there are times when all precautions are taken and something uncontrollable happens and things go wrong. Let's not start a firestorm here. Remember the topic at hand, and the accident that started it all. To speak from experience, I found it moving when a CM ride stopped on Huntington at the ghost bike of Gordon Riker. Riders stopped in front of the bike (momentarily blocking traffic) and raised bikes in the air, a moment of silence was had, and I don't recall any pushback from drivers. I think it was clear what was going on. Signage could help with this. I think there's enough support for this to be a commemorative ride for it to be such. If enough folks are not feeling that, they can go their own way (as the song goes...). That's the beauty of CM. Let's try to keep this respectful. If I'm run down by an auto, I wouldn't want my name to be on the subject line of a debate about fixies in cities.

Respectfully,
Phil Stango

ban fixies in cities...yeah, they're hip, cool, fashionable, and good for
uninterrupted riding but they don't make sense on city streets no matter how
skilled a rider one is (traffic is not that predictable, esp in
Boston)....I can't count the number of times I have seen fixie-riders exhibit some
significant degree of difficulty in controlling their speed or not braking at
all at intersections...too many close calls (come to think of it I could
say the same for a lot of freewheelers as well)...my two cents.

Banning all cars would be highly punitive towards to manufactures' cars that
are capable of stopping safely. If you want to ban fixies, you really should
consider banning Toyotas as well.

=v= You know, it's peachy fine to go on and on about anarchy,
fixies, etc. It's also inevitable (if not entirely fine) that
folks are going to post defensive self-justifications to email
lists over online dustups.

=v= It would be a lot better to have such discussions, however,
under more appropriate "Subject:" headers. None of this has
anything to do with the memory of the deceased, and it's very
disrespectful to attach your random braindroppings to his name.
