[*BCM*] Bostoncriticalmass Digest, Vol 69, Issue 9

Yes, let's not go down this road. I won't even engage the topic of banning a
type of bicycle, though I'm chomping at the bit. Let's just say: know your
bike, know your stopping distance, don't go faster than you can stop, know
that this changes based on road conditions. Any bicycle that is in good
mechanical shape can be ridden safely in the city. Any type of bike, any
tire size, can suffice as long as the rider knows his/her bike and its
limitations. And of course, there are times when all precautions are taken
and something uncontrollable happens and things go wrong. Let's not start a
firestorm here. Remember the topic at hand, and the accident that started it
all. To speak from experience, I found it moving when a CM ride stopped on
Huntington at the ghost bike of Gordon Riker. Riders stopped in front of the
bike (momentarily blocking traffic) and raised bikes in the air, a moment of
silence was had, and I don't recall any pushback from drivers. I think it
was clear what was going on. Signage could help with this. I think there's
enough support for this to be a commemorative ride for it to be such. If
enough folks are not feeling that, they can go their own way (as the song
goes...). That's the beauty of CM. Let's try to keep this respectful. If I'm
run down by an auto, I wouldn't want my name to be on the subject line of a
debate about fixies in cities.

Respectfully,
Phil Stango
