MassBike Mid-May Update

Federal Action Alert: Please Phone/Email Senators Kennedy and Kerry NOW

The U.S. Senate has started debating the federal transportation bill (passed
in March by the House of Representatives). Tomorrow, Iowa Senator Tom Harkin
is expected to introduce a “Complete Streets” amendment to the bill, which
would make it federal law that bicyclists and pedestrians must be
accommodated on streets and highways (due to the work of State Rep. Anne
Paulsen and MassBike, this has been Massachusetts law since 1996, but only
two other states in the country have this provision).

Please call or send an email message to Senator Kennedy and Kerry’s offices
no later than noon tomorrow (Wednesday, May 11) to ask them to support the
“Harkin Amendment to the Surface Transportation Bill.” This amendment deals
with policy changes only and is budget-neutral. You can contact Jay McCarthy
in Senator Kennedy’s office (202-224-4543) or
jay_mccarthy at kennedy.senate.gov and Jamie Hunter in Senator Kerry’s office
(202-224-2742) or jamie_hunter at kerry.senate.gov.
