I would like to offer a few sets of cheapie Planet Bike head and tail
light sets for those who are unable to afford to buy their own. I can
offer at least 5 sets. I bought these from MassBike's "Get
Enlightened" discount bike light program (I paid the crazy price of $7
a set!) a couple of years ago. (These are also the same sets that the
Cambridge Police were giving out a few years ago, when they started
cracking down on cyclists with missing headlights, at the request of
the Cambridge Bicycle Committee.) They are "be seen" lights only, not
ones that will give you enough light to see on a completely dark road
or path (like the Minuteman at night!). But they will satisfy the
state law requiring a headlight at night, and will let pedestrians,
motorists, and other bicyclists see you coming and going.
You will eventually need to buy new batteries for these lights - the
headlight uses "N" batteries, which are a little more difficult to find
(especially in the rechargable persuasion), and the taillight uses
standard "AA"s. But the lights came with fresh non-rechargable
batteries two years ago and they may still have a bit of juice in them.
All mounting hardware is included
Please don't ask for them if you can afford to buy your own. Be honest
so that the people who really need them can get them. If you know of
someone else (nightbor, coworker, friend) who may need them, feel free
to let them know about my offer.
I can arrange to meet people in Davis Square in Somerville. I can't
afford to mail them, sorry.
Also, I can suggest another option for people who simply want something
to stick on the front of their bikes at night, you can buy a cheap LED
or incandescent flashlight for a couple of bucks and duct tape it onto
your handlebars. I've done it, and it worked ok.
