Exciting New Member Benefit: Save Up to 10% on Car Insurance!

If you drive as well as bike, MassBike has an exciting new member benefit
for you. MassBike has just been approved by the state to offer group auto
insurance discounts to our members. We have partnered with The Environmental
Insurance Agency (EIA), which was created by our colleagues at the
Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) to further our joint objective of
promoting alternative forms of transportation, such as biking, walking and
using public transit. EIA is working to reduce insurance premiums for
people who opt to get on their bikes instead of in their cars. Buying your
auto insurance through EIA can help fund this cause. You’ll be receiving a
letter in the mail in the next several weeks with more information about
this terrific deal, but if you would like to get a free quote in the
meantime, please call the Environmental Insurance Agency toll-free at
1-877-999-9EIA. We hope you enjoy this new member benefit, and encourage
you to tell others about the work MassBike is doing to promote cycling and
help the environment.

Boston City Council Hearing Discussing Re-Instatement of Bike Czar Position

Boston City Councilor Maura Hennigan will hold a hearing on Monday, November
22 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss re-instating the “bike czar” position in Boston
city government, which was eliminated in 2003. MassBike strongly supports
the reinstatement of the position and we hope that you can attend to voice
your support. The hearing will take place in the City Council's Iannella
Chamber, which is located on the 5th floor of City Hall. The public is
welcome to watch or testify. If you have any questions about this hearing
or have a personal story to tell, please contact Councilor Hennigan's office
at (617) 635-4217 or via e-mail at: maurah at cityofboston.gov.

Thanks to All for a Fabulous Bike Night

Bike Night 2004 was a tremendous success, drawing more than 175 people and
raising an unprecedented $14,500 for MassBike! Thank you to all who
attended, and especially to our volunteers and sponsors. The Charles River
Wheelmen generously presented MassBike with a $5000 grant to fight for the
Bicyclists’ Bill of Rights and Responsibilities. We’ve thanked our business
sponsors in previous emails and want to praise them again—please see our
website for details! We would also like to take the time to thank the
individuals who served on our host committee, including Diana Pisciotta,
John Tener, Paul Schimek, Howard Schmuck, Jim Campen, Joseph Chapman, Anita
Johnson, Elizabeth Lovance, Tom Revay, Chris Porter, Ted Hamann, and Seth
Yurdin. We’re also very grateful to our event volunteers, including Scott
Jenney, Robin Schulman, Barbara Johnson, Heidi Racine, Bob Nesson, Andrew
Heitner, Rich Giordano, Lindsay Swain, Darren Shaffer, Jennifer Doyle and
Elizabeth Lintner from MassRIDES, Mark Ribeiro, Lisa Laramee, Judie Jackson,
Larry Slotnick, and especially our bike parking captain, Stefano Vietina,
and our graphic designer par excellence Paul Normandia. Please forgive us if
we have forgotten anyone—it was truly a group effort to make this event so
successful. We appreciate everyone’s help.

Thank You to Two Business Heroes: Computer Geeks and Ciclismo Classico

We also wanted to take a moment to thank the Computer Geeks, a terrific
company that for the past six months has been providing free computer help
and support to MassBike because they care about cycling in Massachusetts.
For more information on their great service, visit www.geekcalls.com.
Ciclismo Classico, run by former MassBike Board Member Lauren Hefferon, has
also gone above and beyond. In addition to being an official Bike Night
Supporter, Ciclismo Classico has volunteered to promote MassBike to its
members and encourage them to join. They would like MassBike friends and
members to know about their special offer, where first-time Ciclismo
Classico guests can save 5% on 2005 trips if you sign up by November.

You can find out more at www.ciclismoclassico.com.

A Message from Chris Davenport of the Tyler Hamilton Foundation (Excerpted)

The Board of Directors of the Tyler Hamilton Foundation announces the
creation of www.believetyler.org. On August 18th, Tyler won the Gold Medal
in the Men’s Time Trial in Athens with a time of 57’ 11”. It was a dream
come true. But in September, Tyler Hamilton, an icon in the sport of cycling
and a hero to many, was accused of doping. His life was literally turned
around in a matter of minutes. His career is in jeopardy and his impeccable
reputation tarnished. In the short time that followed the accusation, Tyler
won his Gold Medal for a second time but there is still a long, hard battle
in the fight to defend his innocence to the UCI and WADA. This battle will
take time, money and belief that Tyler was wrongly accused.
