One more obvious thought - you can use the central symmetry of the Dehn
filling plane to get a two-fold speed-up.  Also, I should have mentioned
Boileau's definition of an exceptional surgery:

Suppose that M is finite volume hyperbolic and T is a cusp.  Then the
surgery (p, q) is _nonexceptional_ if there is a cone deformation from
\rho_0 (at infinity) to (p,q) along the radial ray (ie from angle zero to
angle 2\pi) through hyperbolic manifolds (including at (p,q)).
