Alan (and others)
I just looked at your sketch for feeding the northbound bike lane into
an off-road path and across the crosswalk of route 28. This may
certainly be one route that people may want to take, but there are
number of other issues that go along with it.
Until a parallel path to route 28 is built, bicyclists will need to use
the roadway, and even if such a path exists some bicyclists may still
wish to stay on the road.
In addition to feeding the path from the northbound bike lane, there
probably also needs to be a crosswalk or some kind of bike crossing for
those headed from the path to the southbound bike lane.
What's become clear to me is that the bike committee is really the only
ones thinking about how bicyclists are supposed to get into, around, and
out of the Assembly Square area. VHB clearly isn't thinking about this,
nor is anyone else at the city, from what I can see. What can we do
about this? If this is truly going to be a modern mixed-use area that
reduces the amount of private automobile traffic as much as possible,
there needs to be a bike access master plan to ensure that the entire
area is as bike-friendly as possible. This is especially important
because of a number of reasons: the area is surrounded by very
bike-unfriendly roads (28 and 38), and even with the best end result
there will be a good deal of traffic coming into and out of Assembly Square.
What can the bike committee to about this? How do we ensure that we're
not the only ones thinking about this?
Charlie
