Background:
The MBTA is moving forward with an aggressive multi-faceted bicycle program, developed in conjunction with the MBTA’s Bikes and Transit Advisory Committee, MassBike, and Livable Streets Alliance. The T works closely with these organizations to prioritize bike related enhancements. Today, 19 bus routes operating out of the Charlestown and Albany St garages (approx. 125 buses) are 100% rack-equipped. An additional 41 bus routes out of the Bennett and Lynn garages (approx. 205 buses) will be rack-equipped by Summer 2007, at which time 35 percent of our buses will have racks. These rack-equipped buses will serve Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Chelsea, Everett, Medford, Malden, Revere, Charlestown, Lexington, Bedford, Belmont, Arlington, Waltham, Watertown, Allston, Brighton, Woburn, Burlington and Winchester. All of our newly purchased buses are being delivered with bike racks as a standard item.

Providing adequate bike parking is a customer service enhancement and has the potential to increase transit ridership and reduce automobile parking demand at stations. Approximately 85 Subway and Commuter Rail Stations either have no bike racks or the existing racks are often filled to capacity. Two newly installed bike racks at Sullivan Square are the first of approximately 75-100 racks to be installed system-wide over the next six months. In addition to bike enhancements for subway and bus customers, the Commuter Rail Bike Coach will commence weekend service on the Rockport Line on Memorial Day. New updated T Bike Policy signs are being posted at all Subway stations, and 500 car-cards have been installed on buses equipped with bike racks.

Event:	MBTA General Manager Daniel A. Grabauskas joins local officials and community bike advocates to officially kick-off National Bike To Work Week by promoting rack-equipped buses, and the availability of two new bike racks at Sullivan Station. PHOTO – OP.
