Note: there's a short bit of money to promote the wellness policy... So its
possible to get some mini-grants if anyone is interested.

Ahhh, this is super helpful! Thanks Steve! It seems to me as if the School
Committee has bought into this vis-a-vis the District Wellness Policy which
specifically advocates for walking to school. I'll share this material with
Frank DiChiappari here to get his advice on how to proceed. Then, we'd
likely apply on behalf of the District. I'll let you know what I learn from
him after we talk.

On a related note, please feel free to let member of the Bicycle and/or
Pedestrian Committees know that K-8 schools in Somerville have been given
the opportunity to apply for mini-grants of up to $1,750 for project
designed to promote implementation of one aspect of the new Wellness Policy.
If they have students in grades PK-8 in the Somerville Public Schools, they
should feel free to contact their school to learn if there is some way they
can help support their school's application for a mini-grant. Applications
are due on 2/15.

There's two steps.. one which is an educational phase that we'll need some
buy-in from the School Department and a second that would be an engineering
phase that will involve DPW, Traffic & Parking and the Fire Dept... The good
news is that the Safe Routes to School program is now accepting district
wide applications (they wanted individual schools to apply)..

Here's the link to the state program...

Cool! I have lots of competing demands on my time right now - is this
something that needs a meeting (e.g. it is complicated and needs some
face-to-face time)? If so, I wonder if Frank DiChiappari - who actually is
responsible for bussing and walk-to-school stuff - be involved? Your
advice?

Steve-

It has come to my attention that there is money somewhere for Safe Routes to
Schools projects that schools "just need to ask for." My "office" has
become the clearinghouse of information like this. Can you please send me a
link/info on how to access these funds so I can share this with the
Principals and/or their leadership teams?

Thanks!
