January 2007 meeting of the Somerville Bicycle Advisory Committee
Tuesday, January 16, 6:30-8:30 pm basement break room, City Hall
Proposed Agenda:
1. 5 minutes: Approval of December minutes
2. 5 minutes: Status of new members (Jing, Darren, "advertisements")
3. 10 minutes: Review and approve letters:
o Request to Mayor for bike rack installation program
o Comments on Alewife Brook/Route 16 Paths
4. 20 minutes: Steve's City Report issues
5. 10 minutes: Urban Core Study - Ben Rasmussen at CTPS is performing a
study of urban cores that could be helped by bicycle planning.
6. 30 minutes - discussing and setting 2007 priorities (see issues below)
7. 10 minutes: other issues?
8. 20 minutes - subcommittee meetings
Issues to Prioritize and volunteer for in 2007:
1. Community rides: Tour de Somerville, Somerville Historic ride
2. Bike parking: bike parking ordinance, racks/post and ring
installation, MBTA/City abandoned bikes policy, funding for public bike
parking, review of bike parking at new developments
3. Redevelopment Review for bicycle accommodations: Porter Sq. air
rights, Assembly Square/Yard 21, Union Sq., MaxPak/KSS site, Route 28, North
Point, Green Line extension
4. City bike route map, crosstown routes, other maps,
5. Police relations (thank-you note for Sat., community bike police,
future barrier requests, enforcement/education, etc.)
6. On-road bicycling accommodations: striping, lanes, shallow,
Broadway, Somerville, Ave., Washington St. MBTA underpass, specification
guidelines, counter-flow lanes, 1-way streets, signage
7. Long-term Planning: Bhupesh's 10-year plan, Steve's
Implementation Plan
8. Somerville Community Path: phased extensions, Davis Sq.
improvements, on-street alternative route, MaxPak/KSS site redevelopment,
temporary extension to Lowell St.
9. Education: bicyclists, motor vehicle drivers, police, road rage,
business district sidewalk prohibition, ticketing
10. Schools: Safe route to school, annual October bike/walk to school
participation, bike parking at schools, school anti-biking policy
11. Cooperation other organizations: MassBike, Mass Central rail trail
group, Friends of the Community Path, Somerville Dog Owners, Walk Boston,
Boston Bicycle Planning Initiative, Active Living by Design, Green Line
Forum, etc.
12. Mystic River paths: Earhardt dam crossing, MBTA bus yard path, Route
28 bridge undercrossing, path connections
13. SBC: attracting new members, involvement of other volunteers,
bike-related businesses, appointment of City officials, presence on City's
website, public communication, planning/permitting with other city
department
14. Bicycle-related State and federal legislative support
