Subject: Official Request to DCR PED/BIKE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Importance: High
Dear Dan and Danny:
I would like to officially request that the DCR Bike and Ped Advisory Group
review in detail and have substantive input into the designs for all
upcoming DCR bikeways, including, most urgently, the design for the
connection from the Minuteman Bikeway along the Mystic River, as well as the
plans for the paths in the Alewife Reservation. The design and construction
of these projects should not move forward until this happens.
Multi-use paths in urban areas that are used year-round by people traveling
for functional purposes must be lit and appropriately paved so they are in
fact useable (e.g., after 4 p.m. for several months out of the year). Paths
in urban areas need to be able to be plowed and cleared of ice in winter.
They need to be easy to maintain and hold up over time.
Since the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee has been asked to assist
the DCR in its planning and implementation of bicycle and pedestrian
facilities, it should be permitted to carry out that function.
Thank you,
Cara
