I have been trying to build a system from spare parts which is a long
and sordid tale involving multiple hard disks. Now that the dust
is settled, I am getting the error "GRUB hard disk error" when I
boot. This is the disk that I have been using and it had worked
fine in the past until (I think) I installed ubuntu on another hard
disk attatched to the same machine. The disk (SATA) shows up in
the bios. When I use my Suse installation disks, it says that
Linux is detected on hdk (I now only have 1 hd plugged in).
However, Suse's repair tools are useless as the only option available
is to format the disk or a command line which I do not know how to use
to my advantage in this situation. Googling "grub
hard disk error" offers solutions to a lot of different problems, but
they generally all end with a reinstall of the entire system. I
really need a lot of stuff that is on this disk so reinstalling is not
an option. Is there a way of using Suse recovery or Knoppix to
make grub detect the current state of the system and fix itself
accordingly. <br>
