[Linux-disciples] Logins for multiple domains

Suppose you have a number of users from different domains
hosted on one box. What's the canonical way to give them all
shell accounts? When I create a new user for
user at domain.com, I'd like that user to get the home
directory /home/domain.com/user, for instance. Maybe I could
specify other properties, such as that every user called
user at domain.com is automatically a member of a group called
'domain.com'.
I'm sure this problem has been solved completely, given the
number of multi-domain sites running nowadays. Any idea how
they handle it?
In general, is there a good reference to handle the sort of
problems that web-hosting companies would face?
