I don't know about the forks either. I was under the impression that you
just do swsusp and it works.

There should be no conflict between APM and swsusp. swsusp is an
entirely software implemented "hibernation". You need to change your
bootloader to resume from the suspended image rather than normal; if you
don't, you can get some trouble with your filesystem (analogous to
spontaneous reboot without shutdown).
I do think APM support still works in 2.6 although it's probably
deprecated. I stopped using APM a long time ago due to the dreaded "lost
interrupt" on the HP Omnibook.
