Can you borrow a PCMCIA network card to complete the install so that you
can compile a kernel? That would probably be the easiest.
Failing that, you could complete the installation from CDs and compile
the kernel with the support for the network card built in.

Is this a problem with the laptop? Is this happening in text mode? If
so, it must have something to with framebuffering. I'm not sure what
the status of framebuffer support in the Debian boot disks is.
