[Linux-disciples] mounting and using a dvd writer

Typically, you need (at least) the usb-storage module when trying to
mount USB storage devices like CD or DVD drives.
If you want to write a DVD, you aren't going to mount the drive, though,
instead you want to use a package like dvd+rw-tools (or cdrecord-prodvd,
which is nonfree and not in Debian). (see
/usr/share/doc/cdrecord/README.DVD.Debian if you have cdrecord
installed).
Your best bet is to see if the device appears at all. Boot up your
system, and once it's all set, plug in and turn on the DVD writer. Then
run dmesg and see if it acknowledges the existence of the drive. That
will give you some clues to get started.
Do you own this device? I would love to borrow (or just use) such a
device for a few hours some day to do a real backup of my system, which
is sorely belated.
