The right way to deal with large disks without updating the BIOS is to
tell Debian to that your root partition is one of the big partitions
(maybe /dev/hda2) and then go to the 'mount an additional partition'
option and mount /dev/hda1 on /boot.  /boot is the only part that needs
to be below cylinder 1024.

But maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem.
