There's been much discussion of making a free pine clone, but I don't
think anyone has done it, because it would be boring.

You can at least set this person's editor to nano, which is a free pico
clone.  At least that will give them some comfort.

There's always elm, but I think elm doesn't have any advantages on mutt
vis-a-vis novice users.
