This account of what happened is accurate; he was speaking on his
cellphone at the time. There was no collision, but I think his
handlebar twisted around and caused the wreck. I got the hospital
information from the EMTs and checked on him twice last night. I did
not speak to him personally, but at 11 or so he was still being seen,
and by the time I called back at about 2am, he had already been
released, and is expected to make a full recovery..
Thanks to everyone for keeping calm, calling 911, blocking the road,
and especially for providing medical treatment before the ambulance
arrived.
To add to speculation about what I also didn't observe: I overheard
someone (presumably one of the people cycling near him) state to one
of the troopers that he was talking on his cell phone and the wheel
suddenly jerked sending him for a really rough tumble, impaling
