size=3>MassBike is pleased to announce that the federal transportation bill
(known as SAFETEA-LU) passed this weekend. MassBike visited our Congressional
delegation in Washington earlier this year to push for passage of the bill.
Funding was strengthened for key programs that support bicycling (such as
Transportation Enhancements and Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality funds),
and the federal bill also funded Safe Routes to School, a program to increase
biking and walking among children. We believe this bill will have important
benefits for Massachusetts in the years to come. </FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT size=3><FONT
face="Times New Roman"> <o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face="Times New Roman"
size=3>At the state level, one of MassBike’s top legislative priorities—the
Massachusetts Safe Routes to School bill, H. 2121—was voted on favorably by the
Transportation Committee, and advanced to Ways and Means. We are now asking all
MassBike members to contact their legislators and ask them to support moving
this bill out of Ways and Means and bringing it to a full floor vote. If your
state rep or state senator serves on the Ways and Means Committee, that is
ideal; if they do not, please ask them to speak to their colleagues who do serve
on the committee to help move the bill forward. </FONT></P>

rides, and recreational riding. These courses are great for both beginning and

proposed section of the Neponset River Greenway from Mattapan Square to Paul’s
Bridge in Hyde Park and back. All level cyclists welcome; most of this 7 mile
ride will be on roadways. Helmets required. Meet at Mattapan Bridge in Mattapan

kick off. In an unprecedented collaboration, AIDS organizations across
Massachusetts are working together on this joint effort to raise funds and
visibility for HIV/AIDS. The Mass Red Ribbon Ride is a two day, 175
mile bike ride that starts in the Berkshires, and ends in Greater
Boston. (Shorter rides are also available.) This ride is a MassBike Partner
