size=2>Legislative Update: Senate Transportation Bill and Bicyclists’ Bill of
Rights and Responsibilities</FONT></P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=Arial size=2>Thanks to
everyone who called and wrote Senators Kennedy and Kerry regarding the ‘Harkin
Amendment’ to the Senate Transportation Bill two weeks ago. The Harkin Amendment
would have made it federal law that bicyclists and pedestrians must be
accommodated on streets and highways—a law that’s currently on the books in
Massachusetts and only three other states. The amendment failed 44-53, but our
senators were on the right side, and co-sponsored it. Thank you for making your
voice heard and ensuring that our elected officials know that cycling advocates
are paying attention. The House and Senate are currently working out differences
in their two versions of the Transportation Bill, and MassBike will keep you
posted on developments.</FONT></P>

Public Safety Committee on Wednesday, June 29 at 10:00 a.m. in the State House’s
