BIKES NOT BOMBS’ 23rd Annual BIKE-A-THON!
June 6th, 2010
Ride with Bikes Not Bombs (BNB) to support unique bicycle-based
social justice work, through youth programs in Boston and the
donation of over 5,000 bicycles annually to Africa, Latin America,
and the Caribbean. As a grassroots organization, BNB depends on YOU
to join the ride to keep this work going in its 26th year!
Choose from three scenic rides: 15, 25, or 65 miles. Join hundreds of
other riders and roll at your own pace! The 15-miler is especially
great for families with children. We provide mechanics check-ups,
rest stops with food and drink, maps of the beautiful routes, lead
riders, support vehicles, great prizes, and a gourmet meal at your
afterparty - the Green Roots Rides Festival! Rides start and end in
Jamaica Plain, 02130. Pre-registration is required, and riders must
raise a minimum of $150 of pledges for BNB. All riders are required
to wear helmets. Register on our website - www.bikesnotbombs.org/
bat10 - or call 617-522-0222.
It's not too late! When you register on our website you can make your
own online fundraising page - just email out the link and people can
sponsor you online with a credit card. Also, you don't need to turn
in all your fundraising money on June 6th, you just need to at least
have pledges that people will sponsor you. Join us!

GREEN ROOTS FESTIVAL – a public celebration of environmental action
and an afterparty for Bike-A-Thon riders!
June 6th, 2010
Bikes Not Bombs’ 3rd annual Green Roots Festival will celebrate
sustainable urban living in a park that was only saved from becoming
a highway by the grassroots efforts of local communities. Cheer
heroic Bike-A-Thon riders (or be one yourself) as they return from
their ride to an outdoor gathering of environmental organizations,
neighbors, and friends: featuring live street bands, food, artisans,
and thoughtful content on issues of environmental sustainability.
Come on out, Noon to 5:30, in the park in front of the Stony Brook T
station, Boylston Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130. See
www.bikesnotbombs.org/bat10 or call 617-522-0222.
INTERACTIVE STREET
At the Green Roots Festival, Boylston Street in front of the Stony
Brook T station will be closed to cars, and instead will become an
interactive human-centered transit zone. Come out and test ride a
variety of bikes, cargo-carrying bike trailers, and family cycling
options such as trail-a-bikes and kid trailers. Ride through a
temporary installation of bike lane and separated cycle-track to
learn how these ideas are changing Boston now and can do more in the
future (separated cycle tracks are common in Europe but not well
known in America). This exhibit is especially timely as Jamaica Plain
has just gotten the approval for its first bike lanes coming in
2010. Pin the bike lane on Boston, in a game designed to bring more
public participation into the planning of where bike lanes will
change Boston next. Bikes Not Bombs Bike Shop, the T-Riders Union,
Walk Boston, Livable Streets, and the Boston Cyclists Union will all
be on the street to run these activities and talk with festival-goers.
EXHIBITORS
Try out a pedal-powered corn sheller and grinder plus other pedal-
powered machines, brought by the MIT D-Lab and based on designs from
a group in Guatemala that receives bike shipments from BNB. Talk with
environmental and social justice activists and vendors, including
Clean Water Action, herbal remedies, Boston Climate Action Network,
Centro Presente, and many more.
