I agree -- he was riding, commuting or not, on his bike of choice. If he 
wanted to be riding a high performance racing bike, he should have been. 
Also, there's nothing stopping his fixie from going just as fast as your 
21-speed, and if anything, it can and should be faster, b/c he doesn't 
have to worry about "expert racing shifts."

I've never really gotten into this sort of "competition," because most 
of the people I see (and pass) are going pretty slow, and/or on the 
sidewalks (particularly on the mass ave bridge). Sounds fun though.

And best of luck with the wrist, definitely come out for march's ride 
(this most recent one was a ton of fun, albeit small)
