well, i am not sure that i completely agree, because i think a standard of lawlessness might be a good thing, but that's a whole different story...

Lee, I completely agree, I just also think it is important to strike the balance between being heroic in terms of helping someone else out and being heroic by "getting the bad guy". I think your analysis of the situation is pretty admirable, especially given that it was your bike!
