Below are a few choice phrases from the article that I found hilarious.
   
  Ahhh... the 'Yester-year' quote.  Everything smelled like apple pie back then.
  "...When I was growing up, we were the good guys. Eco-friendly wholemealites with a progressive, faintly Dutch-smelling attitude to life. We were virginy students with handlebar baskets toppling with books; teachers with jacket tails blowing in the wind..."
   
  The vandalism quote.
  "...'CYCLIST IN £250,000 TYRE-SLASH RAMPAGE!' says a headline in the Birmingham Post, after Ashley Carpenter was caught sending a 'warning' to 'inconsiderate motorists' with a sharpened screwdriver..."
   
  The perverted quotes
  "...a two-wheeled sex pest who 'uses a racing bike to travel around the west of Scotland trying to lure children into posing for indecent pictures' ..."
   
  "...ride-by thief' who has been terrorising mums..."
   
  "...Cyclists, it appears, have gone naughty..."
   
   
  The yester-year quote is just somebody remembering things better than they really were. Now they want to return "back" to this ridiculous postcard in time.  This is a difficult thing to achieve unless you are Norman Rockwell.
   
  The vandalism quote is interesting because it wasn't long ago (few years) when a similar occurrence happened with paintballs & pellets.  I remember that it made the news, and then the next night the damage doubled because lots of kids (I assume kids) heard about it and thought this was a good idea.  I can imagine if tire slashing happened around here there would be more than a few cyclists that would join the 'cause'.  (not that I condone that behavior).  This could be looked at three ways, an outcry for better riding conditions, as revenge against bad drivers, or just stupid kids.  I wish that slashing tires would raise 250k spent on fixing roads & educating drivers... but I'm not sure the mayor would see it that way, perhaps that could make for an interesting BCM ride... the tire slash ride  -- jk
   
  The perverted quotes... well its just silly to think that grown men wearing florescent & spandex would harm children.
   
  Summing up, I guess that all bicyclists are aggressive, sexual deviants that vandalize & terrorize women, children, & property.  If that is what the news & magazine articles are saying it must be true.

Honestly, that's exactly what I'm saying. Society breeds disrespect. 
So we'd do well to add a whole lot more respect to the equation.
