Since you led with your chin, I'll give you two examples:

1) Intermodal commuting.  I used to work in Lowell, but I live in Porter 
Square.  That's too far to ride every day, so I'd ride to the commuter 
rail in West Medford, train to Lowell, and then ride the two miles to my 
office.  Extrapolate that to someone who lives downtown and works in 
Quincy or Braintree -- same situation, different train.

2)  You never know: mechanical failure, inebriation, hit by a car, etc. 
  Sometimes something happens which prevents even the toughest / most 
jaded / hard core biker from riding home.  It's nice in those instances 
not to have to chain your beloved ride to the nearest pole and hope that 
no one jacks it for that sexy Chris King headset until you get back.
