Yes, 40B is I think a good deal for some people, compared to the open
market, and it doesn't solve all problems. Public policy on housing in
general in MA needs to be improved. And interest rates have come *way down*
in the last month or so for things like new mortgages, plus you get an
appreciable tax deduction for mortgage interest.
The good news at Sawyer Hill is we have built in ways of keeping living
costs down, such as:
1. High quality building materials, which should keep down
repairs/replacement.
2. High insulation and good windows so energy costs will be lower than
similar sized homes
3. A vegetable and fruit garden (we're planning to grow organically) in
addition to people's backyards, so people can look into growing some of
their own.
4. No need for individually owned lawn mowers since we plan to share this
sort of equipment.
5. People have opportunities to carpool for work and for errands and fun.
6. A member is looking into organizing an in-community babysitting coop.
There are other ways, but these are some of the big ones.
Amatul, if you and your housemates (and anyone else reading this) are
interested/curious, we have also have an info session this Tuesday in
Cambridge, in addition to the Northborough and Berlin events I mentioned
earlier:
Come find out about Sawyer Hill Ecovillage and cohousing!
Tuesday, Feb 26
6-7:30pm
Harvest Coop
581 Mass Ave
Central Square Cambridge
(617) 661-1580
Two members of Sawyer Hill Ecovillage will be giving an info session and Q&A
on our village, cohousing in general, and opportunities for living in Sawyer
Hill. We will have pictures of our siteplan and homes. Construction is now
in progress, with move-in later this year.
