[BCN] Filtered water -- how far to go?

Linda and everyone,
Whenever I have a question like this, I check Consumer Reports. I
trust them to give as close to unbiased information as it's possible to
get in this spin-driven world. In addition to information about the
quality of specific products, their articles often are good for an
orientation as to what questions to ask or what features to look for.
I believe one can subscribe on-line for just a month (about $6) or
for a year, or of course one can order the printed magazine, or consult
it at the library. Out of curiosity I looked at the website and they
did an article on water filtration in May 2007, some of which is
available on line for free, but you have to subscribe to get the specific
product ratings.
At our house we used to have an under-sink permanent system plumbed
in, but we found it hard (impossible?) to collectively remember to
change the filter in a timely way, so we took it out. In retrospect we
probably could have come up with some way of making sure it got done, if
we'd thought about it more. Now we use Brita but I hate buying and
throwing out all that plastic. If you wouldn't mind letting the rest of
us know any results of your looking into this, that would be great since
at some point I'd like to consider again putting in something else.

drinking water?
At William Street, we have been using Brita and Pur
pitchers, and have made some effort to look up major
filters that would require installation. We would go
to that expense if the filter guaranteed elimination
of cysts, giardia, and VOCs as well as the usual
metals and chlorine. Thanks for your insights.
