Do you know, I forgot to tell you that I think this
stuff you wrote (below) is very very interesting and smart

"Employee morale has always seemed quite low at
Harvest. Never having been on staff, I don't
know if it's from poor pay, poor conditions, or
poor treatment. Or, two or all of the above.
Maybe someone who's worked there can speak to
that."

Back when I was last seeking a job, before starting my own
business, two young latina sistahs working in the deli at
the Central SQ harvest told me
"lady - you DONT wanna work here.." When I asked them WHY?
they just stared at me and shook their heads and said again
"you DONT want to work here." Now, I have no idea whatsoever
this meant, but I went up the street to the Prospect st WFM
and worked there for a while, transferred 2 brand new store,
got frustrated again and again, and finally left...

Those two girls no longer work there (that I've seen)
Maybe it was just their own personal problem with one
specific supervisor or management that has left that store.

Or perhaps, like myself, they had higher dreams for what
they could acheve in the world of work? I simply dont know.

"I believe that if Members organized and played
a greater role at the Co-op,
and if we rewrote our Personnel-policy to select for
workers who'll be in tune with the meaning and purpose
of the Co-op,
and if these workers were given more opportunity for
collective self-management-
-then, I believe, we could create the coolest place to shop
on Earth.
And, we could also do some other cool stuff, outside the
stores. Which we must confess, would be good business."

Joshua et all,
I really feel there is something to this set of thoughts,
something to hash out in a way that *respects* diversity,
*attracts* like-minded folks, *teaches* and *shares* with
staff the values one believes and works with.
PEACE!

"...justice has two meanings. The elevated definition, the one that we
associate with spiritual masters such as Jesus or the Buddha, is the idea of love and fundamental fairness and equity among all people.
Then we have the exact opposite meaning, which is what I believe our national leaders, for instance, use when the say, 'We want to bring the terrorists to justice.' We don't want to bring them to love, fairness, and equity; we want revenge against them. By having two opposite meanings for the same word, we're able to trick ourselves, or cloak our true meaning..."
