Hi there, everyone! This is Matt Borus; I know many of you, but by way of
introduction, I recently left Boston after living in the Seed Pod Co-op in
Dorchester and the Millstone Co-op in Somerville. I miss Boston, and I
hope that you're all doing well!
I'm now in Ann Arbor, Michigan, living in one of the co-ops connected to
the University of Michigan and working on the co-op system's education
committee. In our system here (known as the Inter-Cooperative Council),
there are about 500 or so students, most of them undergraduates, living in
19 co-ops. Many members don't have that broad a sense of the larger co-op
movement, and we on the education committee want to change that.
So this Spring, we're planning a Co-op Spring Break, in which somewhere
from 10 to 20 people will take a road trip from Michigan to either Boston
or NYC, visiting different kinds of co-ops along the way. It should be a
fun experience that helps to deepend people's interest in and commitment
to the co-op movement. And that's why I'm writing to you all!
If we come to Boston, we need places to stay. As I said, there will
likely be 10 to 20 students, so we know that they probably can't all stay
in one co-op (unless one of you has a LOT of space!!). But we're
reluctant to house people on opposite sides of town for logistical
reasons. So I'm wondering if we might be able to group people in co-ops
that are relatively close together. For instance, there are three co-ops
in Dorchester, and others nearby in JP. There are at least two in
Somerville and several in Cambridge. If some grouping of relatively
nearby co-ops could each house a handful of people for a night or two,
then we could make this a very successful event. And your co-ops could
get good publicity for future recruits!
The Spring Break period here is between Friday, February 23rd, and Sunday,
March 4th. We don't know when we'd be in Boston, but the schedule should
be clearer soon.
The trip can't go anywhere if we don't have places to stay, though!
P)lease let me know if you're interested in general, and then we can
discuss details. Thanks a lot!
In cooperation,
matt
