Joel,
My tone of authority is triple-based: on
experience, research, and 'vision'.
Experience:
I've lived at communes ('intentional
communities'), and so-called 'co-op households'.
I was also active in the Greens. All of these
gave experience in group-process.
I've been a member of buying-clubs and food
co-ops, large and small, for many years, mainly
around greater-Boston. I've attended many
Harvest Members-Meetings and Board-Meetings,
though never served on the Board.
Research:
I've read widely on the history and theory of
the Cooperative Movement, and also Intentional
Communities--which subjects overlap, not
surprisingly. I've also participated in
email-discussion groups on these topics.
In relation to Harvest, specifically, I've also
spoken with former Harvest employees, to learn
from their knowledge and experiences.
Vision:
As an (amateur) historian, the great
Co-operators and Associationists of the past have
become quite present and real to me--so when I
speak on these subjects, I'm speaking out of
inner conversation with them.
Having a view of the historical timeline (of
almost 200 years), enables the mind to
extrapolate to a degree, and 'see' a bit into the
future. Thus, I imagine possible scenarios
playing out, which seem quite real and
predictable, even obvious, to me--but which may
strike normal people, who don't share my
contexts, as totally bizarre and off the wall.
Thus, my attitude of authority may to some extent
be a defense mechanism, against being considered
a total nut-case by persons rooted in the status
quo.
But thanks for asking.
